High-fat diet can not only lead to overweight due to excessive intake of calories, but can also influence the balance of all 24-hour circadian clock, according to a study of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
The biological clock regulates the expression and activity of enzymes and hormones involved in metabolism, thus altering the clock may lead to phenomena such as hormonal imbalance, obesity, psychological disorders, sleep, and cancer.
While light is the factor that more strongly affect the circadian clock, Dr. Oren Froy, and colleagues at the Institute of Biochemistry, Food Science & Nutrition Robert H. Hebrew University Smith in Rehovot, have demonstrated in their experiments with laboratory mice that there is a cause-effect relationship between diet and the imbalance of the biological clock.
The researchers used mice fed either a low-fat diet or a diet high in fat, followed by a day of fasting and then measure the components of adiponectin metabolic pathway in the various levels of activity. (more…)
