It is becoming very clear to the American public that television and radio need “Fairness Doctrine” laws to provide a level playing field for all political viewpoints. In the past 20 years the media, mainstream and otherwise, has become consolidated under the ownership of a handful of large corporations. One company in particular, News Corp., owned by Rupert Murdoch, has taken the practice of promoting right-wing viewpoints to extremes. FUX News hosts regularly shout down guests who attempt to provide a counterpoint to the biased claims of Murdoch’s propaganda. Today Fox News operates without any regulatory boundaries on content, free to broadcast self-serving political viewpoints presented as news, as discussed in this video by Bill Burton and Megyn Kelly.

Barring an act of god, John McCain has lost the election. The only question now is what will be left of his reputation afterwards. If he continues in his current fear and loathing mode, he’ll be remembered as a modern-day George Wallace, the polarizing segregationist of the 1960’s.

Democratic congressman John Lewis, a veteran civil rights leader, accused Republican John McCain and his running mate Sarah Palin on Saturday of “sowing the seeds of hatred and division” and said it reminded him of the segregationist era of Alabama Gov. George Wallace.
Friday McCaine made a lukewarm attempt to be conciliatory towards Obama, and was booed by the crowd at his rally for doing so. To us it seems like far too little and too late, judge for yourself.

But what John McCain has done is worse than telling a few lies. He and Palin are doing everything they can to make uninformed Americans deeply afraid of Obama. Over and over they have attempted to portray a United States Senator as an Arab, a Moslem, and a Terrorist. This is unconscionable: now is the time for all who know better to speak out.

It is a sorry fact of American political life that campaigns get ugly, often in their final weeks. But Senator John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin have been running one of the most appalling campaigns we can remember. They have gone far beyond the usual fare of quotes taken out of context and distortions of an opponent’s record — into the dark territory of race-baiting and xenophobia.

McCAIN: I’m not…I’m not…I don’t have that kind of expertise to know exactly whether he has cut interest rates suffiently or not. I’m glad that whenever they cut interest rates. I wish interest rates were zero.
Just in case you’re not sure what that really means, zero percent interest rates would bankrupt every financial institution in America. Zero percent interest rates would bankrupt our government too. Try telling the IRS you shouldn’t have to pay interest on your late tax payment because McCain told you he wants all interest rates to be zero, and see how far that gets you. On second thought, don’t do that, people who refuse to pay the IRS end up in jail.
